For the week that ended on October 8th, Walt Disney Home Entertainment’s Thor: Love and Thunder topped the Blu-ray only and overall packaged media charts for the second week in a row. The fourth film for the Asgardian god of thunder is the 29th in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and also featured the return of Portman as Jane Porter. Shot in Sydney Australia in 2021, Thor: Love and Thunder opened in July 2022 to mixed reviews, but still managed to top the box office in its opening weekend with over $144 million. So far, the film has grossed over $343 million domestically and over $760 million globally, making it currently the sixth-highest-grossing film of 2022. This week, Thor: Love and Thunder had an HD share of 58% and 21% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Debuting in second place on both charts is Warner Bros Home Entertainment’s DC League of Super-Pets. And coming in third place on the Blu-ray-only chart is Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s Fright Night (1985). The horror film about a young man who discovers his next-door neighbor is a vampire, has always been popular and saw multiple pressings on Blu-ray, including two infamous limited releases from boutique label Twilight Time. which sold out all 8000 copies, before a retail Blu-ray release from Sony in 2019. This week, however, saw the film’s worldwide debut on 4K UHD in a three-disc SteelBook edition with a new Dolby Atmos remix (as well as lossless 5.1 and original stereo tracks) and Dolby Vision HDR, as well as two Blu-rays with the film and extra features. This week, Fright Night (1985) sold 35% as many Blu-ray units as Thor: Love and Thunder, with an HD share of 56% and 9% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Elsewhere on the charts a number of other horror films released on 4K UHD made the top twenty Blu-rays. Shout Factory’s 4K UHD release of Army of Darkness catapulted that film to No. 4, while Paramount Home Media Distribution’s release of Scream 2 landed that sequel at No. 7. Outside the top ten, Sony’s 30th Anniversary SteelBook re-release of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, which sports new Dolby Vision HDR and new extras, brought that film to No. 11, while Shout’s release of the 4K UHD box set The Halloween 4K Blu-ray Collection (1995-2002) which contains the 4K UHD premieres of Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers, Halloween: H20 and Halloween: Resurrection, landed at No. 13 on the Blu-ray-only chart.
