For the week that ended on October 1st, Walt Disney Home Entertainment’s Thor: Love and Thunder topped the Blu-ray only and overall packaged media charts in its debut. The fourth film for the Asgardian god of thunder is the 29th in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and also featured the return of Portman as Jane Porter. Shot in Sydney Australia in 2021, Thor: Love and Thunder opened in July 2022 to mixed reviews, but still managed to top the box office in its opening weekend with over $144 million. So far, the film has grossed over $343 million domestically and over $760 million globally, making it currently the sixth-highest-grossing film of 2022. This week, Thor: Love and Thunder had an HD share of 66% and 31% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Debuting in second place on both charts is Universal Pictures Home Entertainment’s The Munsters (2022). The PG-rated direct-to-video adaptation of the family-friendly 1960s horror sitcom marked a departure for rock star and director Zombie, whose previous films have usually been R-rated with graphic violence. Unusually, the film was released simultaneously on Blu-ray, digital and streaming, making it’s Blu-ray success all the more impressive as fans patiently await the as-yet-unannounced Blu-ray release of the original series. This week, The Munsters (2022) sold 24% as many Blu-ray units as Thor: Love and Thunder, with an HD share of 56%.
Remaining in third place on the Blu-ray-only chart is Universal Pictures Home Entertainment’s Jurassic World: Dominion. The third film the Jurassic World trilogy (and sixth film in the Jurassic Park franchise) began filming in February 2020 for a June 2021 release. However, in March 2020, filming was put on hold when the coronavirus pandemic struck much of the Western world. Filming would eventually resume in July 2020 with the aid of an entire hotel that Universal rented for the production to use as a “bubble”, making Jurassic World: Dominion one of the first films to resume production after the pandemic began. Filming was eventually completed in November 2020 and post-production meant that it was not completed until November 2021. Along with the return of Jeff Goldblum as Ian Malcolm, The film also marked the return of actors Sam Neil and Laura Dern as paleontologists Alan Grant and Ellie Sattler, the two leads in the original Jurassic Park, making Jurassic World: Dominion the first time in almost thirty years that all three characters had been in the same film. Despite this casting coup, reviews for the film have been largely negative, but that hasn’t stopped it from grossing over $376 million domestically and over $1 billion globally so far. This week, Jurassic World: Dominion sold 16% as many Blu-ray units as Thor: Love and Thunder, with an HD share of 56% and 6% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Elsewhere on the charts, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s 4K UHD release of I Know What You Did Last Summer landed that film in the top ten Blu-rays at No. 10, while Shout Factory’s 4K UHD release of Evil Dead came in just behind it at No. 11. Shout’s release also topped the UHD Market Share chart for the week, with 97% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
