For the week that ended on November 12th, Paramount Home Media Distribution’s Top Gun: Maverick remained on top of both the the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts in its second week. Originally announced in 2010, the sequel to the 1986 action blockbuster Top Gun saw several delays, including the death of director Tony Scott in 2012. When filming finally commenced in 2018, a projected release in June 2019 was delayed a year in order to complete the film’s action sequences. That process would be further drawn out by the arrival of the coronavirus pandemic, which would see the film’s release date moved several more times, before it finally opened in May 2022. After a 36-year wait, the result was an enormous success. Top Gun: Maverick opened to rave reviews and over $160 million over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, going on to make over $716 million domestically and even more internationally at over $770 million and counting, for a running total of over $1.4 billion worldwide. In June, the film passed $800 million to become the highest-grossing film in Tom Cruise’s career, while later that month, it became only the second film since 2019 to cross the $1 billion mark, following Sony’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. Currently, Top Gun: Maverick stands as the highest-grossing film of the year. This week, Top Gun: Maverick had an HD share of 59% and 17% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Leaping into second place on the Blu-ray-only chart is Walt Disney Home Entertainment’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The 28th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe finds the titular Doctor having to protect a teenager, who has an uncontrolled capability to travel the multiverse, from Scarlet Witch, who wants to use the girl for her own selfish ends. The film was shifted several times due to the coronavirus pandemic and the scheduling of Marvel’s Phase Four series of films, jumping from 2021 all the way to May 2022. However, that didn’t dampen enthusiasm, as the film eventually opened to a terrific $187 million in its first weekend, eventually amassing over $411 million domestically and over $955 million worldwide, becoming the third-highest-grossing film of 2022. This week, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness sold 12% as many Blu-ray units as Top Gun: Maverick, with an HD share of 82% and 51% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Such is the power of Top Gun: Maverick that even in its second week, Paramount’s Top Gun 2-Movie Collection dropped only to third place on the Blu-ray-only chart. This week, Top Gun 2-Movie Collection sold 13% as many Blu-ray units as Top Gun: Maverick did on its own, with a perfect HD share of 100% and 29% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Elsewhere on the charts, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s 4K UHD upgrade of Casablanca propelled the classic film to No. 16 on the Blu-ray-only chart and to the top of the UHD Market Share chart, with 98% of units sold from the 4K UHD format. Lionsgate Home Entertainment’s release of Earth Girls Are Easy, part of its Vestron Video Collector’s Series of Blu-rays, landed the film at No.19 on the Blu-ray-only chart, while Warner’s Aqua Teen Forever: Plantasm, a direct-to-video new release that was only issued on Blu-ray formats, came in at No. 21 on the Blu-ray-only chart and also did respectably on 4K UHD, with 45% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
